How to clean beer lines

Cleaning beer lines with a beer line cleaning system
There are a wide variety of methods available to clean beer lines. In Australia the most popular and easiest method is using a beer line mixing system as it eliminates the need to manually handle hazardous chemicals. A beer line mixing system is a non electric proportional dispenser which injects the right amount of beer line cleaner for the amount of water entering into the beer lines, this is 1.6% of DP1 & 1.6% of DP2. AUSTRALIAN BEERLINE CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
SAFETY FIRST: Read label & MSDS prior to handling beerline cleaner. Beerline cleaner is corrosive and can cause injury if handled inappropriately. Ensure you are wearing the correct personal protective equipment as specified, such as gloves, goggles & enclosed shoes.Also make sure you have read & understood what to do in the event of an accident, know where first aid and running fresh water is located in your cellar.
- Turn off glycol pump, to stop line freezing.
- Disconnect keg couplers from kegs & connect transfer leads to washout line OR connect keg bypass cups.
- Clear lines of beer.
- This can be achieved in a couple of ways:
- Trading out: Connect bypass cups on the keg and use gas to push the beer out.
- Flushing: Connect bypass cups or transfer leads to washout lines and flush with water.
- Flow reversal: pushing the beer in the lines back into the kegs is NOT recommended by breweries as it may negatively impact on the integrity of the beer, reducing quality of the beer taste. - Connect the water tap to the beer line mixing system inlet and the outlet to the washout line.
- Turn on the water tap.
- Open Beer taps at the bar and pull beer line cleaning solution through. You can test the solution is coming through with Bracton Test Papers, they turn blue in the presence of beer line cleaner.
- Close the taps.
- Leave solution to soak for a minimum of one hour, two hours is recommended.
- (EVERY 4th WEEK) Disassemble taps and soak in a bath of diluted beerline cleaner or Bracton taps & fittings soaker.
- Connect water or gas to washout line and clear lines out with water or gas. Test lines are clear of chemical with Bracton Test Papers, they turn blue in the presence of beerline cleaner.
- Spray Kegs with Bracton Keg Coupling Disinfectant, Reconnect couplers to kegs and turn glycol pump on.
NOTES: Cleaning beerlines with a washout canister or beer pumps, substitute instruction 3 with: Mix 60mL of DP1 & 60mL of DP2 to every 5 Litres of water and connect system to washout line.
Bracton recommends hotels & clubs avoid the use of beer line cleaners with coloured dyes. It has been proven that the colour of the dye can wash out prior to the other chemicals being clear of the lines, leading to the possibility & risk of contaminated beer and chemical. The only proven scientific method of ensuring lines are clear of chemical is with test papers.
EUROPEAN BEERLINE CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Ensure you are wearing the correct personal protective equipment as specified, such as gloves, goggles & enclosed shoes.Also make sure you have read & understood what to do in the event of an accident, know where first aid and running fresh water is located in your cellar.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS:
Normal Clean: 60mL beer line cleaner part one & 60mL beer line cleaner part two per 5 Lt of clean water. Heavy Duty Clean: 180mL beerline cleaner part one & 180mL beerline cleaner part two per 5 Lt of clean water
DIRECTIONS FOR USE: (Pressurized Cleaning Keg)
- Remove beverage from beer lines by flush out with gas or clean water.
- Add water to the cleaning keg, then Bracton beer line cleaner part one & part two.
- Pressurize the cleaning keg & run cleaning solution through the beer lines.
- Once cleaning solution has flowed through beer lines, close the taps & leave for 15 minutes.
- Pull remaining solution through the beer lines & leave for a further 15 minutes.
- Flush the beer lines with CLEAN water. If CLEAN water is not available, connect the beer lines to gas & push the excess beer line cleaner out of beer lines.
- Connect beer kegs as normal & resume service of beer.
- For safest practice, use LITMUS TEST PAPER to check no cleaning residue is left in the beer lines.
